| It doesn’t matter if you’re pretty |
| We’re not gonna name any names, but there are some really ugly people out there who are also really talented musicians; and with the right photos, you could be one of them!!!
When it comes to your EPK, one of the first things a promoter sees is your main photo, and your pictures are an extremely powerful piece of conveying your music’s feel. Your image doesn’t have to show you looking good, but it does have to show something about what your music and performance is like!
Here are some tips on getting the right photos for you:
Think professional (or aspiring professional): Your friends take fine pictures, but the difference between that and those of an experienced photographer with professional cameras and equipment is like night and day. Check into local art schools to see if photography students need a pet band project. Be active during shoots and communicate with your photographer so you get the shots you want.
Be original and have fun: You want your photos to be as innovative as your music. Brainstorm with your photographer to come up with unique ideas that fit with the image you are trying to portray. You may want to avoid press photo cliches like standing in front of a brick wall or on train tracks, but then again, if it’s not fun to do, then there is something wrong. Provide some live shots along with your promo shots.
Keep them updated: Promoters are looking for artists who are reliable and consistent. If you’ve added new members to your group, be sure you have updated your images as well. Don’t book a gig with your promoter under an assumption that your group is a duo when you really just added another instrumentalist.
Go Hi-Res: Almost all magazines, papers and venue promo posters require high resolution photos. Providing a hi-res shot on your EPK is the fastest and easiest way a promoter or your street team can get your image out to the greater public. Standard EPK members can use one photo as a hi-res shot, and Supersonic members can have up to 5 hi-res photos.
