Quality Cables Make The Difference

There is nothing worse than a bad guitar cable. More often than not, you’ll find out the hard way that you have a bad cable. usually in the middle of a guitar solo, or an intro.

There is no warning and no forgiving. A bad cable makes everyone in the band look bad! A simple little cable…Who would have ‘thunk it’? The problem seems to be with inferior cable (wire) and connectors (plugs) which are mass produced overseas. Yes, the price is right but the quality isn’t.

For quality you need to look at custom made guitar cables, such as the ones produced at slygoose cables Sly Goose cables are hand made cables constructed from top quality oxygen free wire, and top quality plugs.

Case in point – recently at a show with one of my bands, I was experiencing a really bad buzzing sound from my wireless guitar transmitter. The soundman and I could not determine the source of the problem, until we  swapped out the signal cable from the wireless to the amplifier. Had we not done that, i would have been forced to use a regular cable – which is so limiting – once you have experienced wireless, you never go back! Now the point isn’t just about good cables, but about the difference a top quality cable makes.

The president of Sly Goose cables (Darren), recently sent me a 1/4″ Mogami Essential cable (M.S. R.P. $28.00 CAD) and It was used for the signal in between the wireless and the amplifier. Going from a horrible buzz to essentially no noise at all was the result from the sly goose premium cable. The noise was completely gone – I don’t mean minimized.. but gone! I had to strike a chord to prove I still had a signal!

In addition to using oxygen free wire, sly goose uses gold plated plugs and hand soldered connections. The difference is amazing. if you want a cable to rely on for live sound, or in the studio use sly goose cables. Darren runs Sly Goose Cables out of British Columbia, Canada. They will ship (and have customers) worldwide.

Open Question: Buying a New Mic for Recording?

Okay, I sing, and play guitar, but now I mostly sing. My vocals are usually normal but at times I do have more aggressive covers, like slipknot, etc. I am working out of my mini studio in my bedroom with my desktop computer, and working on putting together a makeshift studio booth using egg crate foam, blankets, and such.My question is, what kind of mic do I get? Condensor or Dynamic? Do I need to invest in an EQ and Mixer as well? What qualities and specs make a mic a supposed "good mic". My budget is around 150 dollars. Thanks.

Open Question: What do you think of this 500 word college application essay?

After being presented with a recording of Johann Pachelbel’s “Canon in D Major,” I automatically knew that, in a way, this composition had made my choice for me; I would continue to study the violin. Hearing Pachelbel’s Canon was the solidification I needed to remember to be goal-oriented in high school. This determination influenced my educational path because I now had a central ambition that I wanted to accomplish during high school. Although I am active in many different clubs, Key Club has always been my first priority. I realized early into my high school career that as a Key Clubber, it is my foremost concern to help my immediate community. After participating in Key Club for a year, I learned the ins and outs of the town of Carefree and Cave Creek. Aside from all the work that I would put into the towns with Key Club, I would also utilize other facets of my life to benefit the towns. I have been playing the violin for eight years and in my sophomore year of high school, I had the opportunity to take an orchestra class as one of my electives. During the year I brought up the prospect that my class could memorize songs and go caroling with our instruments around Carefree and Cave Creek. My classmates agreed and the caroling became one of our activities during the holiday season. The memories I took from this experience were impactful on me and played a part in my goal. As well as being a part of orchestra class at school, I take private violin lessons. The other pupils at my studio and I decided that it would be an enjoyable opportunity, if we went to a retirement home in the town of Carefree a few times every year and played music for the elderly. Before I went to the home I expected it to be a chance for me to have more familiarity with performing in front of people, but after the first time of going, I quickly learned it was much more than that. Many of the people at the home told us they remember the music that we played for them from their childhood, which brought smiles to their faces. Seeing these reactions instantly allowed me to realize that there are different ways to help the community. Hearing Pachelbel’s Canon is what gave me the willpower to not give up and set goals. As I reflect on these past few years of high school, I recognize that I ultimately did achieve my goal. I was successful in using multiple aspects of my life—school, violin, and Key Club—to assist the community where I live. Having these three parts of my life tightly intertwined was helpful to me completing my endeavor.
